Behind Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s rough, ripped exterior, there is a softer side.

Although the former professional wrestler and box office mogul is now at the top of every Hollywood studio’s wish-list, his life hasn’t always been as successful.  On his way to stardom, Johnson fought outside the wrestling ring with himself, battling lifelong depression.

In an interview with Express, ‘The Rock’ shed his macho-man attitude and opened-up about his past mental health issues.  He mentioned that his depression started after his dreams of playing professional football ended.

After a litany of injuries during his college days at the University of Miami, he tried to make his way into the Canadian Football League, but was soon released.  On top of all that, his girlfriend dumped him.

“Struggle and pain is real.  I was devastated and depressed.”

But, this wasn’t Johnson’s first hardship in life, as he also dove into his mother’s struggle with depression and a scary suicide attempt while he was a teenager.

According to the actor, his mother, Ata Johnson, tried to walk into oncoming traffic in Nashville after they had lost their apartment. Dwayne grabbed her at the last second and dragged her to safety.  Although the incident seemed to have a monumental impact on Dwayne’s life, his mother has no recollection of the event; a typical coping mechanism for depression victims.

He even co-owns a media company, Seven Bucks Productions, along with his production partner, Dany Garcia. The company’s name is an homage to Johnson’s early struggles, when in 1995, he had only a $7 in his pocket, and a dream in his heart.

Always known to inspire and connect with his fans, Johnson has gone a step further with his recent secret.  He’s been responding to fans on Twitter, encouraging them to talk freely and openly about their mental issues. His hardcore persona and 4 a.m. gym workout videos, coupled with his unique ability to express has emotions, has led ‘The Rock’ to become the ultimate role model for masculine men everywhere.

Currently, the Ballers star is promoting his new movie, Rampage.  The films is a mix between King Kong, Planet of the Apes, and every action movie ever.  But, it stars Johnson, so it must be somewhat entertaining.

Lastly, some people believe the righteous actor is gearing up for a transition from Hollywood to Washington, D.C.! According to Variety, the action hero is gearing up for another career in politics, with a potential presidential run in the works for 2024.  Let’s hope this rumor is true so the campaign slogan can be: “America can smell what ‘The Rock’ is cooking!”

Whatever the future for Johnson and his career, there is no doubt that he’s one of the most well-rounded, honest people in show business. From the wrestling ring to the silver screen to potentially the White House, Johnson’s the hero America needs – and the one they deserve!
