“Did you hear? Sylvester Stallone is dead!” says one gullible person. “Oh my God! I can’t believe it,” says their also-gullible friend. One misinformed person tells another, and soon we have a celebrity death hoax topping Google trends. It’s time to dive into five of these Hollywood hoaxes from the past!
Rocky Balboa himself was the subject of the latest celebrity death hoax that made the rounds on social media. It’s true that Stallone looks like he could die any day now, as his hair is white and thinning, and he looks like a frail old man, but the claims on Facebook that he passed away from prostate cancer are utterly false. ‘The Italian Stallion’ even took to Instagram to shut down the rumors, claiming he was “still punching.” Alive? yes. But the only thing Stallone is punching these days is his punch card with father time. Next time, it probably won’t be a hoax.
The stereotypical child star gone rogue, Lindsay Lohan was at the center of a vicious death hoax back in 2010. Then 24-years-old, the actress had suffered from drug abuse and was in-and-out of pricey rehab centers across the world. The internet rumored that Lohan died from an overdose, which at the time was totally believable. As we know now, the hoax turned out to be untrue, but we like to take a more metaphorical perspective on the situation and say that the sweet, loving Parent Trap child actress that we once knew, was definitely dead. I mean, Lohan even recently developed some strange accent and is living in Dubai! Maybe she didn’t die, but her career sure did!
In the decade following the millenium, hotel heiress, Paris Hilton, was everywhere. Behind her stunning looks and gorgeous smile, was an empty head filled with a reality of stardom. But, when she dropped off the radar in 2007, some people grew to believe she had died. Some speculated it was a car accident, other’s said it was suicide, and the most bizarre theory, was that she was stabbed in jail. Okay, that last one is a little crazy!
It’s Britney, bitch. The former pop star rocked the charts with hits like Oops!… I Did it Again and …Baby One More Time, but her celebrity status took hold of her mental state, leading her to shave off all of her hair in 2007, marking the decline of her career. This led to a death hoax in 2010, and then another one in 2016. While her career may be dead, Spears is still alive and kickin’. She’s even killing it on Instagram. Come on, let’s just leave Britney alone!
Finally, every millenial’s favorite death hoax: Kel Mitchell from the Nickelodeon show, Keenan & Kel. Rumors swirled that the funny man from Good Burger took the wrong order, and passed away in 2006. This hoax was widely-accepted throughout society, and I’m sure some people reading this will be shocked to realize that Kel is still alive. I guess we’ll just have to wait to pour out some orange soda for our homie another time!
