Spolier Alert! Shape of Water won best picture in case you haven’t heard. The 2018 Oscars have concluded with it’s usual disappointment. Artists waltzed down the red carpet to show-off expensive, unusual, and inconvenient designer dresses. Tabloids and gossip columns rushed to post their ‘best and worst’ outfits from the evening, with many giving out their imagining red carpet superlatives, stroking their own egos in the process. But over and over again, you scavenge these articles hoping to find something new, but are left unfulfilled with the same old crap. Lucky for you, we aren’t spotlighting the best or worst costumes from the Academy Awards, just five that were simply average!
Get Out star, Allison Williams, looked just as bland on the red carpet as her character in the movie. Donned in the Armani Privé gown that was just alright, Allison was in attendance as her writer and director, Jordan Peele, won the Oscar for best original screenplay. Still unlike Peele, that floor length dress was no original – just another drab outfit that neither impressed or depressed.
Always a bridesmaid and never a bride. Our next maid of honor is Irish-American actress, Saoirse Ronan. The 23-year-old marched down the Oscar red carpet in a pink, floor-length gown from Calvin Klein by Appointment. With matching pink heels and fabric trailing four-feet behind her, it looked like Ronan should have been holding a bouquet of roses on the alter as her friend got married.
Okay, maybe we are a little too harsh on the actress. since she looks stunning in this otherwise average dress. Perhaps the wedding theme symbolizes Ladybird; Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age tale about womanhood that Ronan starred in. Just like the dress though, we thought that movie was definitely overrated!
Emma. We get it! The strong women of the world have finally had their voices heard and opting out of the traditional ballroom gown for the Oscars embodies that movement. Truth be told though, this outfit may not be horrible (as this is a list about average ‘dresses’) but it’s truly upsetting. Stone is a strong and elegant woman. Sure, she broke the traditional mold in this velvet Louis Vitton suit, but wouldn’t it be a more powerful message if she rocked a stunning gown?
Either way, Stone arrived back at Dolby Theatre in 2018 to announce the Best Director category, won by none other than Guillermo del Toro for Shape of Water.
Finally, we have gotten to the most average dressed actress from the Oscars, Jennifer Garner. Argue if you want, but let’s be honest: the royal blue Atelier Versace get-up, complete with train, sash, and cape was little too over the top. Don’t get it wrong, Garner is beautiful. In fact, she probably has the best arms in Hollywood. Although, there’s just something about the get-up that lacks luster; making an otherwise stunning Garner merely average.
