Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama have called it quits after nearly six years together. Demi and Wilmer shared the news of their split with fans in an Instagram post on Friday.
The 23-year-old singer and 36-year-old actor both posted the same message, saying they ending their relationship because they were better as ‘best friends.’
The former couple wrote, “After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship. This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, be we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends. We will always be supportive of each other.”
Wilmer, who was 13 years Demi’s senior, began dating the singer when she was just 18-years-old. But she has previously praised the former “That 70s Show” star for supporting her through difficult times and her stints in rehab for addiction issues.
The pair, who met in 2010 when they shot a PSA for Voto Latino at Wilmer’s home, kept their romance a secret when they first began dating. Lovato, 23, later opened up about how the “Dusk Till Dawn” star, 36, was her support system during herstruggles with bipolar depression and an eating disorder.
Earlier this year, Demi denied that they were engaged but told Ellen DeGeneres that she wouldn’t say no to a proposal. The singer joked that she had not yet seen a ring and wouldn’t mind if she did.
Their split comes on the heels of Lovato mourning the death of her beloved great-grandmother. She attended the funeral earlier on Friday.
Lovato is getting ready for her Future Now tour with her former boyfriend, Joe Jonas.
Wilmer has signed on to guest star on “Grey’s Anatomy”, and also is filming a new military family drama for CBS.
