Joan Rivers’ daughter, Melissa Rivers, has settled a medical malpractice lawsuit filed against the New York clinic deemed responsible for her mother’s death. Joan died after a routine throat operation for a reported eight-figure sum. The settlement is reported to be an eight-figure sum.
Melissa Rivers sued Yorkville Endoscopy after her mother lost consciousness at the clinic in August 2014. The comedian never woke up and died a week later at the age of 81.
Melissa explained her reason for filing the lawsuit, stating that it would make certain those responsible for her mother’s death “accepted responsibility for their actions.”
The case was filed in January 2015. Lawyers for the Rivers family confirmed the lawsuit had been settled on Thursday.
Melissa issued a statement today, “In accepting this settlement, I am able to put the legal aspects of my mother’s death behind me and ensure that those culpable for her death have accepted responsibility for their actions quickly and without equivocation.”
Rivers added, “Moving forward, my focus will be to ensure that no one ever has to go through what my mother, Cooper and I went through and I will work towards ensuring higher safety standards in out-patient surgical clinics. I want to express my personal gratitude to my legal team for their wise counsel and prompt resolution of this case.”
The legal team for the family adds that they realize no amount of money will compensate the family for their loss. They hope that higher safety standards will be put into effect to prevent another tragedy.
