A costume company is causing controversy, after offering a Caitlyn Jenner Halloween outfit on their website.
Fans and members of the transgender community were livid after a version of the Call Me Caitlyn outfit (similar to her Vanity Fair cover look) was posted online. Funny or in bad taste?
The “Call Me Caitlyn” costume consists of a padded top, matching shorts and a wig.
Spirit Halloween and AnytimeCostumes.com are one of several retailers carrying the costume, which is selling for $74.99.
The company has tried to back away from controversy, issuing a statement saying, “Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year, and Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her”.
Spirit Halloween first announced plans to launch the controversial costume across several pop up stores last week.
Another version of the outfit become available to buy on retail sites anytimecostumes.com and wholesalehalloweencostumes.com.
The costume is an attempt to copy the cover of Vanity Fair, where Caitlyn (formerly Bruce Jenner) unveiled her feminine identity for the first time.
Another costume featuring the former Olympian was featured on another website, Buy Costumes, but was later removed.
Fans of Caitlyn and members of the transgender community have taken to Twitter to express their outrage, calling the costume extremely insensitive and tasteless.
One woman named Michelle Vidrine believed it promoted ideas of exclusion, tweeting, “What kind of society are we to allow people to mock Caitlyn_Jenner on Halloween with a costume! We got some work to do on inclusion.”
Others commented that it was no better than bullying.
Kellie Knapp wrote, “This is so freaking mean and cruel. Cait is courageous and beautiful and yes even a role model. How dare people.”
Molly Rose tweeted, “@SpiritHalloween making a costume out of Caitlyn Jenner and “tranny granny” is disgusting and mean-spirited. You’ve lost my business.”
Addison Rose Vincent, a Transfeminine Genderqueer activist, launched a petition on Change.org asking for Spirit Halloween to cancel the launch of the offending product.
She wrote, “To Spirit Halloween: We demand that you revoke your ideas and production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume for Halloween.
“With a reputation of sexist, racist, and culturally appropriative costumes, we are concerned that this costume will continue your oppressive tradition with a transphobic costume of Caitlyn Jenner.
‘To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse. In this case, if you follow through with production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume, cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community.
“Do not turn Cailtyn Jenner into a costume. Your profit will only lead to greater transphobia and marginalization of an already at-risk community. Much appreciated, Addison Rose Vincent.”
It appears everything is offensive these days. Do you guys think this is really wrong?
