Shannen Doherty has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The Charmed actress revealed the news when she filed a lawsuit against her former business manager, who she claims allowed her health insurance to lapse.
The 44-year-old actress may need to undergo a mastectomy and chemotherapy.
Doherty confirmed the news today, saying, “Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment. I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me”.
It was also revealed she found out she had cancer in March, when her health insurance kicked in again and she felt comfortable going to the doctor.
Her business manager is employed at Tanner, Mainstain, Glynn & Johnson and it was claimed she was giving the company five percent of her income. Shannen stopped working with the firm in 2014.
She claims the firm ignored an invoice for payment of the premium in 2014 to the Screen Actors Guild insurance.
The site added that the insurance was cancelled and she was not able to enroll again until 2015.
A source said, “Shannen says during the lapse period she didn’t regularly visit doctors, which had been her practice”.
The cancer was described as ‘invasive breast cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node.’
Doctors reportedly told the star her the cancer spread during 2014 when she was uninsured.
That is why Shannen is blaming her business manager, it was claimed. If she had seen a doctor sooner, the cancer may not have spread so far.
Shannen stated in her claim, “In truth, the firm and former partner [Steven] Blatt specialize in fleecing actors and entertainment industry professionals. After gaining control of all of their clients’ cash and assets, they find a way to lose it, sometimes by gross incompetence, sometimes by self-dealing and outright theft.
“Along the way, they habitually deceive their clients, going so far as to set up bogus transactions, to conceal their misdeeds, errors and omissions. The firm has hallmarks of a Ponzi scheme.”
In her lawsuit, Doherty claims she has been unable to work since the diagnosis and has incurred ‘significant’ medical expenses.
The Mallrats star has been married to photographer Kurt Iswarienko since 2011.
Doherty has several movies that will be released including the television movie “All I Want For Christmas”, along with Bukowski, Bethany and Undateable John.
Shannen is most know for her role as Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210, which aired from 2008-2009.
