Alex Rocco dies at age 79

Alex Rocco, the actor best known role is Moe Greene in 1972’s “The Godfather”, passed away on July 18.  He was 79-years-old.

His death was first reported by his daughter on her Facebook page.

Alex Rocco was born Alexander Federico Petricone in Cambridge Massachusetts.

He moved to California and worked as a bartender, before taking acting classes with teachers including Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek’s Mr. Spock).

Rocco starred in a few small roles in movies such as The St Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967), and The Boston Strangler (1968).

He also appeared on television shows like Batman and That Girl, before landing his role of Moe Greene in Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic classic “The Godfather.”

Greene was the top Jewish mobster in Las Vegas in the movie.

Rocco continued acting in the 70s and 80s, appearing in such The Stunt Man, Cannonball Run II, Dream a Little Dream.

Rocco’s movie career continued through the 90s in movies including Get Shorty, That Thing You Do, and The Wedding Planner.

The actor won an Emmy Award in 1990 for best supporting actor in a comedy the short-lived CBS series The Famous Teddy Z, starring Jon Cryer.

At the time of his passing, he was scheduled to appear in the horror movie “The Other.”
