Harry Potter & Elephant Man Actor John Hurt Diagnosed With Pancreatic Cancer

Veteran actor John Hurt has revealed he has been diagnosed with cancer but plans to keep acting and is “optimistic” about his future.

The 75-year-old actor has starred in The Elephant Man in 1980, Midnight Express, as Mr Ollivander the wand-maker in the Harry Potter films, and many more.

Hurt issued a statement on his diagnosis, saying, “I have always been open about the way in which I conduct my life and in that spirit I would like to make a statement. I have recently been diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer. I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team.

“I am continuing to focus on my professional commitments and will shortly be recording Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell (one of life’s small ironies!) for BBC Radio 4.”

The star was awarded a knighthood for services to drama in 2014.

Hurt has been nominated twice for an Oscar, for his work in The Elephant Man and Midnight Express.

The younger generation will recognize him as Mr. Ollivander, the wand-maker, in the first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. He returned for the adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but his scenes in that movie were cut. He also returned for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2.

Hurt starred in V for Vendetta , Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull , Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Hercules. He also famously met his end in Ridley Scott’s 1979 Alien.

The actor,  who has two children, is married to his fourth wife.

He was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire and is the son of an an amateur actress and a clergyman.

Hurt attended art college, before landing a scholarship to Rada (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art).

Sir John has been nominated for two Oscars, for playing John Merrick in The Elephant Man and Midnight Express.

He enjoyed a big hit with sci-fi horror Alien in 1979.

The star was awarded a knighthood for services to drama in 2014.

He also starred in a special 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who.
