Melissa Rivers sat down for a chat with Hoda Kotb to discuss of late mother, Joan Rivers, and discussing the drama on “Fashion Police”.
Rivers was offended with Kathy Griffin’s remarks when she announced her departure from the show, feeling she slammed her mother in her statement.
Melissa sat down for an interview at the 92nd Street Y, saying Griffin wasn’t the right choice to take over as host after her mother Joan Rivers died last year.
She explained, “I’m just going to say it wasn’t a match on a lot of levels. My biggest complaint was the feeling that she kind of s— all over my mother’s legacy in her statement on leaving.”
Rivers adds, “And I know that that was not an intentional reading of it, but that’s how I felt. But I know that wasn’t how it was intended.”
E! has pulled the plug on ‘Fashion Police’ until September.
Griffin hosted just seven episodes before quitting in March amid heavy criticism the show received over a comment Giuliana Rancic made about Disney star Zendaya’s “weed”-smelling dreadlocks at the Oscars.
In a statement, Griffin dissed the show’s conceit, saying she did not “want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference.”
Kelly Osborne also quit the show, and E! pulled the plug on March 17, saying it was going on hiatus until September in order to “refresh” its format.
Rivers said Griffin was trying to cover her own butt — and dumped on her late mom in the process.
She stated, “I understand what you’re doing. You’re trying to save yourself, but don’t crap all over my mother to do it”.
Melissa talks about Kathy Griffin at the 21:00 mark:
Melissa said the show would return to air, and that she and her producers were in the process of hammering out a new direction.
Hoda asked, “What do you think [Joan] is thinking looking down at the shards?”
“I think there might be a little bit of a twinkle in her eye, saying ‘You all couldn’t do it without me, could you?” Rivers said.
