Patrick Dempsey’s exit from Grey’s Anatomy was a huge shock to fans and really was rather confusing. Dempsey had a two-year contract that would have him on the series until season 2012.
New reports suggest that Patrick was killed off after he cheated on his wife with a young lady that worked on the set of their show. Did Shonda Rhimes fire him for his affair?
Dempsey’s Dr. Shepherd was a very popular character on the show and his sudden death on the show seemed rather odd.
Insiders revealed that Rhimes, who has a “no BS policy”, may have felt the need to get rid of the actor after his alleged affair that caused tension on the set.
A source said, “Patrick had an inappropriate relationship with a young woman who worked on the set.”
Dempsey’s 15-year marriage was hit hard by the affair, but his close friendship with co-star, Ellen Pompeo was also ruined.
An insider said, “There was tension in Patrick and Ellen’s relationship for years before the final blowup. [She] was sick of his behavior on and off set. Then, the actress, who plays his on-screen wife, found out about Dempsey’s alleged infidelity and flipped. [His co-star] Ellen Pompeo found out and was angry because she’s close friends with Jillian, so of course, she told her.”.
The source adds, “Patrick found out that Ellen told his wife about the relationship and totally lost it. They had a huge blowup on the set in front of everyone.”
After the news blew up behind the scenes, Shonda took matters into her own hands and killed off Dempsey’s character. Although Dempsey had more time left in his contract, the producers apparently just “didn’t want him causing trouble.”
“Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rimes briefly addressed Meredith’s future in a statement following Thursday’s episode, in which Dr. Shepherd was hit by a car and his wife made the difficult decision to take him off life support.
Dempsey was asked why he left the show in the middle of the season, replying, “(Pause) It just sort of evolved. It just kind of happened. [Being written off] was something that was kind of surprising and uh, just naturally came to be. I like the way it has all played out”.
He continued, “Things happened very quickly… It was just a natural progression, the way the story was unfolding, the way everything was unfolding in a very organic way. It was like, ‘Okay! This was obviously the right time.'”
Ellen Pompeo posted a statement on the Dempsey’s final episode, but did not mention her years of working with Patrick.
