This will certainly make for awkward holidays! Mischa Barton has sued her mother, Nuala Barton, claiming she stole money that the actress earned over the course of her acting career.
The former O.C. star alleges her mother, who managed her career for over 20 years, not only took her earnings but also kicked her out of her Beverly Hills home that was purchased with her money.
The actress, who shot to fame at the age of 17 with her role on the popular television drama The O.C., filed the lawsuit on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
The lawsuit claims that Nuala lied about the amount her daughter was being paid for a 2013 film called “The Hoarder” and pocketed the difference.
Mischa says her mother Nuala is a “greedy stage mother posing as a talent manager.”
Barton discovered that she was paid more than her mother suggested, leading to the conclusion that Nuala pocked more than the 10 percent management fee.
In the lawsuit, Barton says her mother used her daughter’s name to open a fashion boutique in London and kept the profts from it as well as a handbag line.
Mischa Barton has sued her mother, alleging she stole money that the former star of the television series “The O.C.” earned throughout her career and made endorsement deals that damaged the actress’s reputation.
The lawsuit also accuses Nuala of kicking her daughter out of a multimillion-dollar Beverly Hills home that was purchased with money earned while Mischa Barton was a child actress.
Mischa Barton was 17 when she began working on “The O.C.” and already had appeared in the films “Notting Hill” and “The Sixth Sense.”
The legal documents state that Nuala was bullying her daughter, and states she has been fired from her management role.
“While Barton was busy perfecting her craft and turning her acting dreams into reality, her mother, defendant Nuala Barton, was secretly scheming to exploit Barton’s bourgeoning career for her benefit,” the lawsuit states.
Barton claims her mother made it to where she had co-ownership of an eight-bedroom mansion in Beverly Hills and then took out loans against the property before kicking the actress out.
The star’s parents are currently living there and “sit back expecting their daughter’s hard work and dedication to her craft to support their lifestyle.”
The two have lived with their daughter in the home since a 2009 incident that resulted in Mischa being placed in an involuntary psychiatric hold.
