R&B singer Johnny Kemp has been found dead in Montego Bay, Jaimaica. Police revealed the 55-year-old singer was found dead “floating” near the beach.
Kemp’s wife confirmed the tragic news, after police identified him by his Bahamian passport. So sad.
He is most famous for his song “Just Got Paid”, a song that celebrates the feeling of having a pocket full of money and being ready for a night on the town.
Christopher Powell, an assistant to Kemp for the past three years, told theGrio.com he received a call from Kemp’s wife Deidre Thursday saying the singer was dead.
There were rumors he fell on the Tom Joyner cruise, but Powell stated, “He couldn’t board the [Tom Joyner] cruise because he didn’t have a permanent residency card or something. Kemp is Bahamian. Whatever it was, he didn’t have the right paperwork. They wouldn’t let him board.”
Powell said Kemp caught a flight from New York’s Kennedy Airport to Jamaica Wednesday morning.
Powell said Kemp returned to a hotel in Montego Bay that same night.
The hotel called Kemp’s wife Deidre to inform her the singer was dead. Deidre was growing concerned when Johnny was not responding to her phone calls or e-mails. He was due back in New York on Friday.
Kemp’s wife posted on her Facebook page Friday afternoon, writing, “Lord, hold onto me as I go forward with faith in You.”
The Corporate Communications Unit, the information arm of the police, stated that Kemp’s body was found face down at around 9:50 am on Thursday. They believe Kemp possibly fell and hit his head on the rocks.
Along with “Just Got Paid,” Kemp also sang hits like “Just Another Lover” and “Dancin’ with Myself”.
Kemp is survived by his wife Deidre and the couple’s two adult sons, Jared and Jason.
Our condolences to his family.
