Billy Corgan, lead singer of The Smashing Pumpkins, discussed his thoughts on the music industry today and gave his opinion of the infamous Kanye West and Beck incident at this year’s Grammy Awards.

Corgan was in Australia as part of the Soundwave music festival, where the intelligent singer gave his opinions on various subjects.

Billy was asked about pop music today, stating, “I know it’s a bit early but to me it’s headed basically towards a form of pornography.  You have particularly young women sexualizing themselves earlier and earlier in really inappropriate ways to get attention.”

Corgan did not want to specify any artist, explaining, “You can’t blame an artist for chasing a trend. You can only look at the industry and say that their lack of self responsibility ultimately has impacted a once great business…”

The Smashing Pumpkins singer was not trying to be disrespectful in his comments on the Kanye West and Beck incident but said “he believed it was inappropriate for any artist to take somebody else’s moment and make it their own….”

Billy said, “I don’t know Kanye, but I think he’s speaking from his heart…I think he really believes what he’s saying, I just think that’s the inappropriate venue to do it, because in essence that’s Beck’s moment”.

Well said!

Corgan did admit that if he would have been in Beck’s shoes that he would “knock them out”.

Hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies laughed as Billy reiterated, “I don’t care who it is, I would have knocked him out.”

The Smashing Pumpkins will perform a headline show in Sydney on Wednesday night at the Luna Park Big Top, before taking part in the Sydney and Brisbane festivals this weekend.
