It is strange to even imagine these movie roles being played by anyone else, but we have a list of onscreen performances that could have turned out much differently.

Let’s check out these popular movie roles that stars either turned down or simply went to another actor.

“Gone Girl” director David Fincher has revealed that Reese Witherspoon was considered for the role of Ben Affleck’s wife in the thriller.

The awesome movie starred Rosamund Pike, after the director didn’t think Witherspoon was right for the role.

Witherspoon explained, “We had a long conversation where [Fincher] was like, ‘You’re not right for it. And this is why'”.

Can you imagine Tom Cruise’s ex-wife, Katie Holmes, on the prison series Orange Is The New Black?

The show’s creator, Jenji Kohan, revealed she originally wanted Katie Holmes to play the lead role on her Netflix hit show.

“I’m a big fan of [Holmes] . I met with her originally for Piper, I believe,” Kohan told E! News.  Katie was “busy” with other projects at the time andTaylor Schilling was cast as Piper Chapman

Burt Reynolds as a slick businessman in “Pretty Woman”

The actor was actually offered the role of Edward Lewis in “Pretty Woman” but ultimately declined and the role went to Richard Gere. He later joked with Piers Morgan in 2012 that after he saw the movie and the sex scenes with Julia Roberts, stating he regrets not taking the part.

Pretty Little Liars star and singer, Lucy Hale, auditioned for the sexy film, Fifity Shades of Grey”.

In the end, the role went to Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith’s daughter Dakota Johnson.

Lucy said of her audition, “It was a two-page monologue of exactly what you would think it would be.  Very uncomfortable. But it was sort of one of those things where you just had to go for it or you’re just gonna look lame—hopefully, I didn’t look lame.”

Lindsay Lohan was originally offered the role of stripper Jade in The Hangover, which later went to Heather Graham.

The comedy was a big hit in theaters, but Lindsay didn’t think the movie had any potential in 2009.  Big mistake, but Heather did a great job on the part.

Quirky New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel, who recently revealed she is expecting her first child,  was nearly cast in the lead female role in Silver Linings Playbook.


The role landed Jennifer Lawrence an Oscar for her portrayal of Tiffani Maxwell. Vince Vaughn was also reportedly considered for the part Bradley Cooper played.

“The Matrix” trilogy was very popular with Keanu Reeves as the star, Neo. Would it have still been as good if Will Smith accepted the part?

Smith later said of passing up the opportunity, “You know, ‘The Matrix’ is a difficult concept to pitch. In the pitch, I just didn’t see it. I watched Keanu’s performance – and very rarely do I say this – but I would have messed it up.”
