Most of us find music very healing after a break-up, maybe even more so for these singers and song-writers.
These musical artists channeled their feelings (or grudges and dirty laundry) into songs about their exes.
Love and even heartbreak is part of life and it is healing in some way to talk to friends about the failed relationship.
Music artists have a platform and we can’t blame them for channeling their feelings into their music. Let’s be honest…these splits have resulted in some great songs. Let’s check them out!
We can’t start off this list without Taylor Swift! She has been criticized for writing about her exes, but she is writing from her personal experiences (or at least her personal view).
Taylor doesn’t normally reveal exactly which ex-boyfriends her songs are about, but we can read between the lines!
Swift wrote the song “Dear John” after their short relationship ended.
John had his own fun by writing the song “Paper Doll” about Swift, with lyrics including, “You’re 22 girls in one”. And honestly the “Prancercise” lady reminds us a bit of Taylor.
Harry revealed he doesn’t mind and said at least they are good songs. He’s a good sport!
Ellie reportedly cheated on Ed with One Direction star Niall Horan.
Who can forget Justin’s kiss-off song “Cry Me A River”?
Timberlake debuted the song in 2002 and even used a blonde Britney lookalike in the music video. JT reportedly ended the relationship of three years after Spears cheated on him with choreographer Wade Robson.
This song will bring back memories for most of us! Bon Jovi’s song “You Give Love a Bad Name”.
Jon Bon Jovi dated actress Diane Lane in the 80s and the song was apparently written about her. Interesting!
This video’s lyrics are definitely NSFW:
Alanis’ bitter song was about her ex-boyfriend Dave Coulier (yes, Uncle Joey on “Full House”).
Singer Pink (aka Alecia Moore) let Carey Hart have it in her song “So What”, which even featured cameos by Carey. Thankfully they worked things out and are now parents to an adorable little girl named Willow.
Ray J, who is more known as Kim Kardashian’s sex tape partner than a music artist, wrote the super classy track “I Hit It First”.
He talks about how Kim K “moved on to rappers and ball players,” but that he was with her first (or maybe at least her first sex tape).
The lyrics include “I had her head going North and her a** going South, But now baby chose to go West. No matter where she goes or who she knows, She still belongs in my bed”. Keepin’ it classy Ray J!
Lily Allen isn’t a woman to cross, something her ex-boyfriend DJ Lester found out. The British singer released the song “Smile”, which isn’t nearly as sweet as it sounds from the title.
He actually went to the media with his own version of their split. But Lily told a British newspaper, “He was my first love which felt sacred. I wouldn’t have been as upset if it was one of the others. I didn’t love reading about it in the papers — my grandparents didn’t either. Spineless b**tard. As revenge, I slept with all his friends, actually.” Yikes!
We can’t compose this list without including Carly Simon and her song “You’re So Vain”.
Carly Simon has never officially revealed just who her 1972 hit was written about, but people have speculated it could be Warren Beatty, David Bowie, or David Geffen.
Miley Cyrus dissed Nick Jonas after their split in 2007, recording the song “7 Things”. Miley slammed Nick for being so vain and insecure, among other things.
Years later Miley released the emotional (and very naked) music video for her song “Wrecking Ball”, which was about her former fiance Liam Hemsworth.
One of my favorite Sheryl Crow songs is “You’re My Favorite Mistake”, which a much nicer diss track. She has remained quiet on the identity of the “mistake”, but many believe her cheating lover was Eric Clapton!
Fleetwood Mac (a band we adore) have many great songs but the relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham inspired some sad and beautiful songs.
Stevie wrote this beautiful and emotional song “Silver Springs” about Lindsey.
A beautiful tear-jerker song comes from British singer Adele, entitled “Someone Like You”.
Adele’s song describes a devastating breakup that only gets worse when she later sees her partner living the perfect life. The song is about her ex-boyfriend, photographer Alex Sturrock, on her album 21.
