We are sad to report that Joanne Borgella, a season seven “American Idol” contestant in 2008 has lost her year-long battle with cancer.
The model and singer’s family made the announcement today, sharing the sad news that Joanne had succumed to endometrial cancer early this morning.
Her family took to her Facebook page on Saturday to share the tragic news with fans. Borgella often kept her fans posted on her life and cancer battle.
In a Facebook post, they wrote:
“With heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Joanne. At an early age, Joanne made a choice to serve and trust the Lord; and since her diagnosis over a year ago, Joanne made a choice to also be a fighter and share her journey with the world.
“Her faith, courage and strength were unshaken throughout every obstacle she encountered. Although our family is suffering with this great loss, we find comfort in the closeness Joanne shared with the Lord. We know her spirit still shines and will continue to live on in heaven.”
Joanne was signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City, Miami and LA. She was the first winner of Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance pageant as “Miss F.A.T.” in 2005.
She later appeared on “American Idol” in 2008 and made it to the top 12 girls and top 24 of all the contestant before being eliminated.
Borgella appeared as a coach on MTV’s “Made” in 2011. In 2013, she joined the cast of NUVOtv’s hit show “Curvy Girls”.
Joanne was diagnosed with cancer in October 2013 and updated fans on her progress.
She revealed she was suffering from a “rare case” of the illness, which had spread from her uterus to her chest.
On her 32nd birthday, she took to Facebook to give her thanks to fans, family, and friends.
She wrote, “Through trials and tribulations he has given me peace, serenity and has carried me through! It is because of my faith in The Lord that I am here today and I am beyond thankful. The journey I have been on these past 9 months has not been easy BUT it has been beautiful. So thankful for all the love and prayers from family and friends and from those I have never met(love you guys) FAITH is a beautiful thing”.
