Elizabeth Pena, who recently had a guest starring role on ABC’s “Modern Family” as Sofia Vergara’s mother, has passed away at the age of 55.
Pena’s specific cause of death has not been revealed, but her manager said she died on Tuesday of natural causes after a brief illness.
Elizabeth’s nephew, Mario-Francisco Robles, wrote an obituary in the Latino Review confirming the sad news.P
The actress was known for her roles in films such as “La Bamba,” “Transamerica,”, “Lone Star,”, “Jacob’s Ladder”, “Rush Hour”, and “Free Willy 2”.
She appeared on the small screen on shows such as “Matador,” “L.A. Law,”, “Dream On”, “Resurrection Blvd.”, and “Modern Family”.
Pena’s career spanned four decades and she was a founding member of the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors.
She was remembered via social media by admiring Hollywood stars.
Zoe Saldana tweeted, “My heart is broken!!! My prayers are with you and your family. We will miss you #ElizabethPena”.
“Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria, 39, remembered Pena and her contributions. She tweeted, “Rest in Peace Elizabeth Pena…you paved the way for so many of us!!”.
Pena is survived by her husband Hans Rolla, her mother, sister, and her children – daughter Fiona, and son Kaelan.
