Kristen Stewart being skewered over military comments

Kristen Stewart has been busy promoting her latest movie “Camp X-Ray” and is being skewered over her comments about the U.S. military.

Kristen was describing her character as “simple, not very smart”, but some considered that a slam to everyone in the military.

Stewart plays the role of a female soldier who receives orders as a prison guard to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Her character is surrounded by jihadists, but she has her eyes opened to the apparent cruelty in which they live and befriends a suspected terrorist.  She then questions her role in the U.S. military.

“All she want’s to think is ‘They did 9/11, they’re bad, f*ck that, I’m going to do my job and I’m going to do it well,’ But then she gets down there and just can’t accept it; she can’t conform to that,” she said.

Protagonist Amy Cole enlisted in the Army as an act of patriotism in the wake of 9/11.

The actress said of her character, “She’s simple, not very smart, and really socially inadequate—but a good person. So, if you can sign up, put a uniform on, and erase yourself, you don’t have to consider yourself anymore”.

Many appear to take her comments as meaning you don’t have to be very intelligent to enlist in the armed forces.

Kristen Stewart slams dumb military?

Stewart defended the detainees at Guantanamo Bay as “f*cking evil” and “crazy” because they are people too.

The actress stated, “It’s a ridiculous idea for you to think that you know anything for sure in life—other than to take care of your fellow people. Where the f*ck do you get off thinking otherwise? These two people couldn’t be from more different worlds and perspectives, and probably disagree fundamentally on most things, but there’s a through-line for all of us—and that’s what people forget, and that’s what makes people capable of doing terrible things to each other. What makes you different from any other person that walks the earth?”

“Camp X-Ray” reminds people that GTMO is still present because President Barack Obama didn’t close it down as he promised in 2009.

Stewart said she didn’t take the role to make some political statement, but she conducted a thorough investigation into the detention center.

Stewart explained, “I don’t want to talk about that sh*t at all. Trust me, I’m only asking for it. When it comes time to stand up and affect change, I’m not the type of person to shout from the rooftops. Just because you’re an actor and in the public eye, people think that’s how you must be. But there are other ways to do that. That’s not me.”

Do you find Kristen’s comments offensive?  The movie actually looks pretty interesting though!
