Twenty people have been injured, nine critically, after a platform collapsed during a performance by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Providence, Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred during a part of the show at the Dunkin Donuts Center known as the Human Chandelier, where eight acrobats are suspended by their own hair.
An amateur video of the accident taken on an iPhone shows the scary moment as the crowd lets out a loud gasp.
A curtain falls to reveal the platform with the performers suspended by their hair, when suddenly the platform and the female acrobats crashed to the ground.
Eight of the performers fell when the hair-hang apparatus failed, said circus spokesman Stephen Payne. One performer was injured on the ground.
The victims fell about 35 feet to the ground and were quickly rushed to Rhode Island hospital.
Roman Garcia, the general manager of the touring circus, said, “Everybody’s conscious. Everybody’s doing well. We ask everybody to pray for the girls”.
The circus had just arrived in town on Friday and performances were scheduled through Monday, before moving on to Hartford, CT.
