Donner was asked if he’d be directing a trendy comic book film soon, with the filmmaker replying, “If you call Goonies a comic book. We’re doing a sequel.”
There has been speculation about a sequel, but in the past the report was shut down as simply a rumor. Maybe not now?
The director added that “Hopefully, all of them” would return for the sequel.
Sean Astin, who played Mikey Walsh, said in 2012 on the possibility of a sequel. He told IGN.com, “I’m 1000 percent certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.”
Feldman wrote on his blog, “There is no Goonies 2! I’m sorry but it’s just not gonna happen. It seems every six months the rumor mill gets started up again and people run around both excited and angry, and eventually I have to respond. I would have loved to do this movie under the direction of Donner (who wouldn’t?) but it is just not meant to be. Hope that’s settled. Course now that I’ve said that they’ll do it.”
