Patrick Dempsey’s 79-year-old mother Amanda died on Monday night after battling ovarian cancer for nearly two decades.
The former “Grey’s Anatomy” star was at his mother’s bedside as she passed away. So sad.
Dempsey, 48, was inspired by his mother’s brave battle and created the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in 2007.
Amanda had suffered with recurring cancer since 1997.
On Tuesday, the president of the health center with the Cancer foundation, paid tribute to Amanda, who had remained dedicated to fundraising despite her own illness.
Peter Chalke said in a statement, “Amanda Dempsey was both a great lady and a determined fighter who displayed tremendous courage, class and grace during her long battle with cancer.”
Chalke also adds that the Dempsey family had all been dedicated to raising money to help other families going through the scary experience.
He adds, “Patrick and the entire Dempsey family have made a huge difference in this community. We will miss Amanda deeply, but we were all blessed by knowing her and being inspired by her life story.”
Amanda had been in remission for five years when she led the Survivor walk as part of the annual Dempsey Challenge, which has raised $5 million.
Amanda often volunteered at the Center and helped sew comfort items to be given out to those suffering with cancer.
Patrick Dempsey opened the center six years ago, saying on opening day, “For a family to get a cancer diagnosis is devastating, and all the information out there can be overwhelming. I talked to my sister[s] about a place where people could go for all this type of information and help. Knowledge is power.”
Our condolences to their family on the loss of Amanda Dempsey.
