Tyler Glenn tried to keep his sexuality a secret for years, but the frontman and keyboard player revealed he is gay in Rolling Stone magazine.
The article hits newsstands on Friday, but honestly didn’t most of us assume he was gay?
Glenn, 30, admits realizing he was gay since his childhood but kept the news to himself.
He admits opening up about his sexuality has made him so much happier, taking to Twitter to share his news.
Tyler writes, “Yes. I am a happy and healthy Mormon gay pop star. I don’t know what it all means, but I’m ok with it… I’m the happiest lil weirdo i’ve been in my whole entire life. Thank you for the support and love. XT. I had my crushes on guys throughout high school, but it was never an overwhelming thing until my twenties. Then I’d be dating girls and in love with my straight friend and it was the worst feeling in the world.”
The “Everybody Talks” singer was inspired to reveal his true sexuality by the sports stars who have come out recently, which includes football player Michael Sam.
Tyler Gleen said, “I appreciated Michael Sam was like, ‘I want to be able to go to the movies and hold hands with my boyfriend.’ Even hearing him say “boyfriend,” I was just like, that’s cool.'”
The singer actually started sharing his news with close friends and family in October while he was completing writing songs for Neon Trees’ third album.
The record, entitled Pop Psychology, will be released April 22.
Tyler was raised a Mormon and said, “We were always taught, and I hate this word, “tolerance”. The only time that felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up”.
He adds, “I’ve always felt like I’m an open book, and yet obviously I haven’t been completely.”
