The younger brother of actress Salma Hayek was involved in a fatal car crash in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Sami Hayek, 40, was driving a 2006 Ford GT sports car eastbound on Sunset Boulevard around 4:50pm when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the westbound lanes and crashed into a 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup.
Sami’s unidentified 43-year-old male passenger died at the scene while Hayek was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical center for several broken ribs and facial lacerations.
The name of the passenger has not been released as authorities were still trying to notify his next of kin.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma pickup, 20-year-old Alvin Javier Gomez, was also taken to the hospital for a broken foot and body pain.
Det. Zachary Hutchins of the Los Angeles Police Department stated, “Sami Hayek, 40, a resident of Los Angeles, was driving a 2006 Ford GT eastbound on Sunset Boulevard when he lost control, crossed over into westbound traffic and collided with Alvin Gomez, a 20-year-old resident of Los Angeles driving a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. As a result of the collision the front passenger of the GT, a 43-year- old resident of Mexico, sustained major blunt force trauma to his body. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and pronounced the front passenger dead at the scene”.
Authorities are uncertain what caused Hayek to cross over the yellow line. The investigation is on-going.
Sami and older sister Salma were born to parents Diana Jimenez Medina and Sami Hayek Dominguez.
Sami Hayek runs his own design studio in Los Angeles and is married to jewelry-designer Daniela Villegas. The couple reside in the Hollywood Hills.
