Many people seem to have an issue with a gay actor playing a straight person in a television or film role, feeling once they know they are gay it’s hard to take them seriously in the role.
But they seem to have no problem with heterosexual actors playing gay in movies. Tom Hanks, William Hurt, Sean Penn, and Charlize Theron are all straight and were awesome in roles as a homosexual.
We think a good actor is a good actor and it shouldn’t matter what their sexual orientation is if they are talented!
Let’s take a peek at some really great actors that are gay in real life, but played straight roles.
One of our favorite stars has to be Neil Patrick Harris!
Harris has lived his life as an openly gay man and has twins with his partner David Burtka. But Neil Patrick Harris is awesome as Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Mother”. On the series, his character is a lying, cheating womanizer who finally settled down with one woman. We actually totally forget he is gay because he’s such a great actor.
Another great actor is Jim Parsons!
The Emmy Award-winning actor Jim Parsons has been in a serious relationship with a man for 10 years. His character on “The Big Bang Theory”, Sheldon Cooper, is in a relationship with a woman. And in the movie “Garden State”, Jim played the role of boyfriend to the main character’s mother.
David Hyde Pierce was great as Niles Crane on the popular series “Frasier” that aired from 1993 to 2004. He played the brother of Frasier, Kelsey Grammer, and always had the hots for the maid Daphne. In real life, Pierce came out as a gay man in 2007. He married Brian Hargrove in October 2008.
Comedian Wanda Sykes, who came out as gay in 2008, has played straight in movies such as “Evan Almighty” and “Monster-In-Law”. She also played a straight character in the comedy “Pootie Tang”. Gotta love that title! Sykes married her wife Alex earlier that year.
Hottie Matt Bomer not only played a straight guy, but a straight sexy stripper in “Magic Mike”.
Bomer, who stars as Neal Caffrey on “White Collar”, is in a relationship with Simon Halls. They have three children together via a surrogate.
Victor Garber played a very convincing straight guy many times in films including “Sleepless in Seattle”, “Legally Blonde”, “You Again”, and “The First Wives Club”.
Garber has been with his partner, Rainer Andreesen, for 13 years.
Jodie Foster has had a long and very successful career playing so many straight female characters, such as “The Accused” and “Silence of the Lambs”. She officially came out in 2013 during her speech at the Golden Globe Awards. She was in a relationship with Cydney Bernard from 1993 to 2008.
These are all not only great actors, but totally believable in their movie and television roles.
