Batman fans had a minor freak-out when Ben Affleck was announced as the caped crusader in the upcoming “Batman Vs. Superman”. But now things have gotten weirder, with Jesse Eisenberg being chosen as Lex Luthor.
Eisenberg normally plays geeky loners in movies like “Zombieland” and Social Network”, which suits him. But Lex Luthor? Are you freaking kidding?
The 30-year-old actor has been cast as Lex Luthor in the sequel to 2013’s “Man Of Steel”, while Jeremy Irons will play Batman’s loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth. Irons’ casting makes sense but Eisenberg?
There were rumors that “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston was being offered the part as Superman’s arch nemesis. In fact many fans tweeted that wanted “Heisenberg, NOT Eisenberg”.
Previous Lex Luthor villains include Kevin Spacey in the 2006 “Superman Returns” and Gene Hackman in “Superman” in 1978.
Actor Michael Rosenbaum starred as a pretty darn convincing Lex Luthor in “Smallville”.
Zack Snyder defended the casting choice in the statement announcing the news. We guess he knew fans wouldn’t be thrilled.
Snyder said, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions”.
Now, we remember seeing Jesse Eisenberg acting like a total a**hole to an interviewer.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see the final product!
