Columnist Liz Smith, a good friend of the couple, revealed the happy news in one of her recent posts.
Smith wrote, “IT WAS AN EVENTFUL NEW YEAR’S EVE. My longtime friends, Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014. My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents.”
Lily Tomlin dropped hints last summer that they might be headed down the aisle, following the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling.
The 74-year-old comedic actress and her 78-year-old partner never thought they would see that come to pass in their lifetime.
The “9 to 5” star stated, “You didn’t think that would happen. It’s pretty remarkable. You don’t really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice. Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very very happy about it.”
There are no details yet of where the couple married or their wedding guests.
Tomlin previously said if she married that it certainly wouldn’t be a tradition wedding. She joked, “No rings, no bridal dresses, maybe we’ll be dressed like chickens”.
Lily and Jane first met in March 1971, when they collaborated on a comedy album. They have had a romantic and working relationship for four decades now.
