MTV has named their top 10 artists of 2013, with the musicians ranked by their music sales, air time on television and radio, live performances, social impact, and those that created the most buzz this past year.
Let’s see who they chose as Best Artists of 2013!
10. Lady Gaga
Mother Monster took a little break after hip surgery, returning with a #1 single, “Applause,” back in August. We don’t see Gaga dropping from the top ten lists anytime soon.
Singer Lorde may be only 17, but was signed by Universal at the age of 13. Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, released her song “Royals” that topped Billboard’s Hot 100 for weeks. She also holds the record for the longest reign on the Alternative Songs chart by a lead female.
8. Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars has topped the charts this year and was a winner at the VMAs and EMAs. Mars also nabbed Grammy nominations for Record and Song of the Year.
Drizzy released his album “Nothing Was the Same” in September, after beginning the year with his hit song “Started From the Bottom”. He’s also spent his time hanging out in strip clubs with Rihanna this past year. Clearly winning!
6. Katy Perry
Katy Perry’s “Roared” onto the charts this year with her album “Prism”, which sold over 286,000 copies the first week. You can’t turn on your radio and not catch her song “Roar” and or emotional song “Unconditionally” on the radio lately.
5. One Direction
British boy band One Direction has had a busy year, releasing their new album “Midnight Memories” and their 3-D movie “This Is Us”. The band also won Best Song of the Summer at the 2013 VMAs.
4. Kanye West
Kanye released his new album Yeezus this year and also became a first-time father. The rapper made headlines with his crazy comments and most recently with his on-stage rants and sexy “Bound 2” video.
3. Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake showed us all he is a talented actor, but this year made his return back to music. JT topped the charts and even reunited with his band ‘NSYNC at the VMAs. That night he also took home four awards.
2. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Mackelmore came out with their catchy hit song “Thrift Shop”, before topping charts again with “Can’t Hold Us”. The band promoted gay rights with their hit song “Same Love”.
1. Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus came in like a “Wrecking Ball” in 2013, unveiling her new risque look and making headlines around the world. Love her or hate her, but this 21-year-old former Disney star isn’t going anywhere soon.
Miley keeps pushing the envelope and topped the charts with her “Bangerz” album. Her music videos for “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” received lots of attention. Not to mention her VMAs performance with Robin Thicke.
She apparently twerked her way to the top this year to land the title of Best Artist.
