GQ released the cover images for its 18th Annual Men of the Year issue, which features Justin Timberlake, Matthew McConaughey, Kendrick Lamar, Will Ferrell and the late James Gandolfini on their five covers.
The issue hits newsstands on November 19, but we have some sneak peaks for you here!
Funnyman of the Year – Will Ferrell
Leading Man of the Year 2013 – Matthew McConaughey
Rapper of the Year – Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar was honored with the title on “Rapper of the Year” on one of their five covers, but the rapper refused to attend the “Men of the Year” party on Tuesday night.
He pulled out of performing at the event at the last minute because he was angry with how he was portrayed in the interview.
In his GQ profile, the reporter talked about Kendrick and his team’s “discipline”, writing, “Kendrick doesn’t smoke weed or drink booze. In the time I spent with him, I never witnessed anyone roll even the thinnest spider leg of a jay, nor did I see Kendrick so much as glance at the many, many girls around him.”
The rapper and his label didn’t find that a compliment. The CEO of Lamar’s Top Dawg Entertainment record label Anthony Tiffith stated, “To say he was ‘surprised at our discipline’ is completely disrespectful… Kendrick deserved to be accurately documented.”
Tiffith continued, “While we think it’s a tremendous honor to be named as one of the Men Of The Year, these lazy comparisons and offensive suggestions are something we won’t tolerate”.
Justin Timberlake Man of the Year
Justin Timberlake is also featured on one of the five magazine issues, but told the publication he “doesn’t feel cool”.
“Listen, I’m not cool,” Timberlake insisted. “Being cool is about keeping your blood pressure steady. So no, don’t be cool. Be passionate. Be dedicated. Be tenacious. Be uncompromising. Be pissed. Be happy. Be sad.”
“I’ve made a career out of doing things I should not be doing. I wasn’t cool about it,” the singer continued. “Because being cool would have meant I passed up on those opportunities. If you do that, it’s because you’re afraid. And what are you afraid of, you know?”
The late James Gandolfini was also named Man of the Year.
The beloved “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini was honored on a cover of the GQ Men of the Year issue, following his sudden death at the age of 51 in June of 2013.
