Fans have been given their first glimpse of Angelina Jolie as “Maleficent” in the newly released trailer for the upcoming Disney movie, which will hit theaters in May 2014.
The film is based on the classic Sleepy Beauty story, but told from the point of view of the “mistress of all evil”. It looks awesome!
Angelina’s youngest daughter, five-year-old Vivienne, plays the role of Elle Fanning’s character Aurora as a younger child.
The teaser shows Aurora (Elle Fanning) confronting the woman in the shadows that she has felt watching over her throughout her life.
Aurora says in the clip, “I know who you are; you’ve been watching over me my whole life. I know you’re there. Your shadow has been following me ever since I was small. Don’t be afraid.”
Maleficent responds, “I’m not afraid”, with Aurora replying, “Then come out”.
The evil presence then emerges saying, “Then you’ll be afraid.”
The movie focuses on the events that hardened Maleficent’s heart, leading her to curse the baby Aurora, played by actress Elle Fanning.
Angelina Jolie, 38, said earlier this year of the movie, “It’s not anti-princess, but it’s the first time they’re looking at this epic woman. I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities”.
She adds, “It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect. In general, it’s a very good message to say, ‘Let’s look at something from the other side'”.
