August Schellenberg, who is known for playing many Native American roles and played the mentor character in “Free Willy”, passed away at the age of 77.
The actor died after a battle with cancer in Texas, reportedly passing away peacefully surrounded by his family members.
Schellenberg played the Native American mentor in “Free Willy” as well as in the sequels.
He played the role of Jessie’s mentor Randolph Johnson in the films.
Schellenberg, who is Mohawk and Swiss-German, often played Native American characters.
He also played the role of Powhatan in Terrence Malick’s “The New World”, alongside Christian Bale and Colin Farrell in 2005.
August Schellenberg was nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for playing Chief Sitting Bull in “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”
His last movie appearance was in 2012′s “The Last Movie”.
Schellenberg is survived by his wife, actress Joan Karasevich, and three daughters.
