Country music star Randy Travis is reportedly in critical condition with heart problems.
Travis was hospitalized in Dallas, Texas on Sunday, suffering from viral cardiomyopathy, a heart condition caused by a virus that causes inflammation of the heart muscles.
The 54-year-old “Three Wooden Crosses” singer has had a rocky past few years, filled with whacky behavior and DUI arrests.
Randy Travis seemed to be back on the right track and had recently completed his court-ordered rehab and was touring again when he was struck down by pneumonia. The pneumonia led to the viral cardiomyopathy.
The country star was airlifted to a Dallas hospital on Sunday, where he had heart surgery on Tuesday.
Randy’s sister-in-law Teresa Traywick who is married to Travis’ brother Ricky, stated, “We have been told he has had surgery. Our prayers are going out to him.”
Traywick adds, “My husband just had a heart attack last year, so it is in their family… Their mother passed away at an early age with her heart… My prayers are with them (the rest of the family). That’s all I can say right now.”
Randy Travis upcoming show in Deadwood, South Dakota on Wednesday has been canceled.
Travis’ rep Kirt Webster clarified the country star’s condition today, explaining, “Travis was admitted into a Texas hospital on Sunday and underwent placement of an Impella peripheral left ventricular assist device for stabilization prior to transferring hospitals. ”
The device helps pump blood from the lower chambers to the rest of the body.
Travis issued a statement saying, “We are very thankful to the fans for their love and support during this time.”
