Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly died of a drug overdose, a toxicology screening confirmed on Monday.
An investigator from the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the screening found a fatal mixture of drugs in the “Jump” rapper’s system.
Kelly, 34, was found dead on May 1 at his Atlanta home. His mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, told police that the rapper had a history of drug abuse and had experienced episodes in the past.
Police were called to Kelly’s home around 4:30 p.m. on May 1, 2013 and the rapper was transported to an Atlanta Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5pm.
The medical examiner did not indicate which drugs were found, but Pratte previously told authorities that her son had been doing heroin and cocaine the night before he died.
Chris Kelly was on half of the teen rap sensation duo Kriss Kross, alongside Chris Smith. Kelly was known as “Mac Daddy” and Smith’s nickname was of course…”Daddy Mac”.
The rap team Kriss Kross was known for wearing their clothes backwards.
The rappers were discovered at age 13 at an Atlanta mall in 1990 by rising music producer Jermaine Dupri.
Kriss Kross landed a spot on Michael Jackson’s Dangerous world tour in 1992.
Chris Kelly was recorded in a home video shot in his home partying the morning before his death. Kelly and his pals appear really drugged out.
