Former couple Meg and Jack White announced that their band, the White Stripes, has split.

Jack and Meg White have announced they will “make no further new recordings or perform live” together as the White Stripes.

They said there is a “myriad of reasons” for the split and that they want to “preserve what is beautiful and special about the band”.

The band formed in Michigan in 1997 and had hit albums including Icky Thump, White Blood Cells and Elephant.

Jack was the singer and played guitar and his former wife Meg played drums.

Their latest release was their live album Under the Great White Northern Lights, released in 2010.
