“At Last” singer Etta James has leukemia and also suffering from dementia. Her husband and son are now battling in court over control of her finances.
Etta is so ill that her husband of 41 years Artis Mills has filed a court order to take control of over $1 million of the singer’s money.
In legal documents filed in a California court, Mills claims Etta is unable to manager her money due to her health. Etta’s physician said the singer cannot sign her own name and needs help with feeding, dressing, and hygiene.
Her husband stated in the documents that his wife said “if she ever became disabled, she did not wish to be placed in an institutional nursing facility as long as they had the money to keep her at home”.
But Artis is facing problems from her son Donto James and his brother Sametto James and wife Christy, who were given power of attorney by Etta in 2008.
Donto’s court filing says he is fine with releasing money to cover his mother’s medical treatment, but would rather a third party be put in charge “to avoid present and future family conflict and discrepancies”.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Friday.
