Morgan Freeman is recovering after undergoing surgery Monday following his weekend car accident in Mississippi.
“Morgan is doing well after surgery last night to reconnect nerves and to repair damage to his left arm and hand,” his rep tells Entertainment Tonight. “He is in good spirits and was visiting with family members this morning.”
His rep tells ET that The Dark Knight star, 71, was walking around this morning after the four-and-a-half-hour surgery.
He is expected to be released in a few days.

Update: There are more details this morning on Morgan Freeman’s scary crash ““- and it looks like rain could be to blame.
A neighbor tells the Memphis paper that he saw the car actually flip several times on the very narrow road made slick from heavy rain, and that the 1997 Nissan Maxima came to rest upright in a ditch eight inches deep with water. Freeman was initially unconscious, says the person who found him, but was talking with paramedics afterward.
According to witnesses, there were garden tools, “lots of recipes,” herbs and spices found near the car. Freeman is still in the hospital being treated for a broken arm and other injuries.
Freeman kept his sense of humor even after the accident when a person on the accident scene whipped out their cell phone to take a photo of the actor. Freeman joked, “no freebies, no freebies.”
The MHP tells us Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima eastbound on Highway 32 when he ran off the edge of the road, flipping the car. Both he and and his passenger — now identified as Demaris Meyer — were both wearing seat belts at the time.
So who is Demaris Myer?
Demaris Myer is a 48-year-old from Memphis, works as an executive assistant at Fed-Ex and is an avid gardener. One source tells us that Meyer is a very close friend of Morgan’s wife Myrna and is often seen at their house for get-togethers. You can view Demaris Myer’s photo below.
Freeman was driving Meyer’s 1997 Nissan Maxima in rural Mississippi when he lost control and the car flipped. Meyer was treated for her injuries and released.
Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman was seriously injured in a car accident in Mississippi on Sunday night according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. It’s been announced that Freeman broke both his arm and his shoulder.

Police report that Freeman, 71, was driving eastbound on Highway 32 near the town of Ruleville, Miss., around 11:30 p.m. when his car left the road and flipped several times.
Police say Freeman and a female passenger had to be extracted from the vehicle with the jaws of life and the actor was airlifted to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., where he was listed in serious condition. There was no word on the condition of the passenger.
The Dark Knight star was said to be driving with an unidentified female passenger just north of the small town of Ruleville at around 11.30pm local time on Sunday (03Aug08) when the crash occurred. No other vehicles were involved.
“Morgan has a broken arm, elbow and has minor shoulder damage but was in good spirits when I spoke with him a short time ago in Memphis at Memphis Regional Center,” a rep for Freeman told Access in statement. “He is having a some surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to help correct the damage. He says he’ll be OK and is looking forward to a full recovery.”
Freeman’s car appeared to have gone airborne from the highway into a ditch, according to McFerrin.
The accident is currently under investigation, but no alcohol was involved, Mississippi Highway Patrol told Access. The spokesperson went on to say that no charges have been filed against Freeman.
Freeman won an Oscar for his work in 2004’s “Million Dollar Baby.”
Freeman, 71, currently stars as Wayne Enterprises CEO Lucius Fox in the “Batman Begins” sequel “The Dark Knight.”
He also currently starred in the action thriller “Wanted” and the comedy drama “The Bucket List.”Freeman won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Million Dollar Baby” in 2005.
His other credits include such films as “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Unforgiven” and “Street Smart,” which earned the actor his first Oscar nomination.
More news is coming out on Morgan Freeman’s car accident. Freeman was on his way home to Charleston when the smash-up happened. Bill Luckett, Freeman’s friend and co-owner of Freeman’s restaurant Madidi, said his buddy was sitting up and talking at the hospital.
One source tells TMZ that Freeman has broken several ribs and injured his knee. His female passenger, we’re told, had to be cut out of the car using the Jaws of Life. A source says she’s suffering from bumps and bruises, but is “all in all in good condition.”
