Fifteen years ago this week, Lorena Bobbitt became infamous for cutting off her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt’s penis.
Lorena Bobbitt spoke on The Early Show about what happened 15 years ago, when Lorena cut off her husband’s manhood and threw it in a field.
Lorena claimed her husband at the time, John Wayne Bobbitt, an ex-marine, had come home drunk and raped her.
Lorena went into the kitchen to get a drink of water, grabbed the knife, and cut off her husband’s penis while he slept.
She says he was emotionally and physically abusive to her throughout their four year marriage and forced her to have an abortion against her will. Lorena was found not guilty of the malicious wounding charge due to temporary insanity and was ordered to spend 45 days in a mental health facility for evaluation.
Lorena became notorious for the headlines in countless newspaper and magazine articles. Now 15 years later, Lorena is ready to talk about the incident and use her notoriety to help others.
On the Early Show, Lorena said, “All of a sudden, my private life is out in the open and it’s an open book and a lot of people know my history. Sometimes I couldn’t even go to the grocery store to buy food because I would be recognized.”
Lorena is now a mother to a two year old daughter, Olivia. She also has dated a man for over 14 years, fiancé Dave Bellinger.
Lorena Bobbitt has attempted to stay out of the limelight, but ex-husband John Wayne has sought it out, even starring in several highly publicized adult films.
Lorena had this to say about John Wayne Bobbitt, “That kind of did bother me that he was, you know, going up and trying to make money off a tragedy and you know that was a tragedy. I mean if he doesn’t consider it a tragedy then he’s wrong,” she said.
John Wayne has had several run-ins with the law, including a 2003 domestic violence conviction.
Lorena stated, “I hope that he’s definitely seeking help. If he needs help because he does need help, you know, he keeps on abusing women and I’m working on my goal and I’m trying to focus on my life and I do have a new life.”
Lorena hopes to open a shelter someday to help other women from making the mistake she did 15 years ago.
“Don’t ever take the law into your own hands. No, never,” she said. “Because take that from me, that’s the advice that I give, don’t take the law into your hands – it’s not good.”
John Wayne and Lorena divorced in 1995 after six years of marriage. They have not spoken to one another since that time.
