Serena Williams, the 5th seed, won her entry into the French Open second round. She crushed her competitor – fellow compatriot, Ashley Harkleroad.
Serena was actually broken in her opening service game. She overcame that and read Ashley correctly to win 6-2, 6-1. Ashley was ranked at world number 61. She put up a brave fight against Serena. The tennis match lasted 76 minutes. They used Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Serena had plenty of tournament practice this year after her victories in Bangalore, Miami and Charleston. She had 8 Grand Slam singles titles under her belt. Serena would face Mathilde Johansson, the French wildcard, in the following second round soon.
