Lou Filippo, a California referee for over 30 years as well as being in the World Boxing Hall of Fame, died Monday in Los Angeles at age 83. Read more on Lou Filippo below.

Lou Filippo boxed professionally as a lightweight in the forties and fifties. The WW II vet stacked up a pro record of  23-9-3 with 8 KOs.

Filippo ended his boxing career with fights against  Hall of Famer and former lightweight champion Carlos Ortiz.

Filippo was in many television and movies, and played a referree in the second, third, fourth and fifth installments of the “Rocky” movies.

Lou Filippo was a referee for over thirty years until he retired.

Rapper Mike Beck has reportedly been shot and killed in New York. Read more on Mike Beck’s death below.

Beck, a member of Fat Joe’s K.A.R. was reportedly gunned down in Brooklyn on Friday during an attempted robbery.

Rapper N.O.R.E. paid tribute to Mike Beck in a post on his personal Twitter.com page. He writes, “Rest in peace. He was a real dude, Mike Beck. I did records for him (sic) and he ate in my crib, ‘n drank too. F**ked up my weekend. R.I.P.”

Considered by many to be a comedic genius, Soupy Sales has died of cancer at the age of 83. Read more on Soupy Sales’ life and death below.

Soupy Sales was a beloved pie-in-the-face type of comic that was beloved by the Baby Boomer generation.

Soupy’s friend, Dave Usher, said the comic died of cancer at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx.

The comedian was born Milton Supman in North Carolina.  He was most well-known for his children’s show “Lunch with Soupy Sales.”

The show’s silly sketches had crazy characters like White Fang, Pookie the Lion, Peaches, Philo Kvetch, The Mask,  “Onions” Oregano”.

Most of his shows ended with Soupy Sales getting a pie smashed in his face, and it became his trademark.

Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Shirley Maclaine appeared to throw the pies at Soupy.

Soupy said he was hit with about 20,000 pies during his career.

Later in the eighties, Soupy Sales had a radio show in New York and appeared in the comedy “Birds Do It.”  Soupy was also a regular on ” What’s My Line?” from 1968 to 1975.

After Sales retired, he lived in New York.  Soupy Sales is survived by his wife Trudy and their two sons, Hunt and Tony.

The Clay County Florida Sheriff confirms the body found in the landfill is the missing 7 year-old girl, Somer Thompson. Read more on Somer Thompson’s disappearance and murder below.

Somer Thompson’s body was found in a Georgia landfill about an hour from the Jacksonville area she had been missing from since Monday afternoon.

Somer Thompson vanished on her mile-long walk home from school on Monday. Somer was reportedly walking with a group of children, including her older sister. Somer was arguing with another child and her sister said to stop. This upset Somer and she walked ahead of the rest of the kids.  Once the children made it home they realized that Somer was no where to be found.

They started looking for her and then contacted her family and later police.

The body found in the landfill is believed to be Somer’s based on the clothing and a birthmark on her leg that matched the body found.

The sheriff  had to tell Somer’s mother on Wednesday night, and of course she is devastated.

“It was the hardest phone call I’ve ever had to make in my life, and I hope I never have to make another one like that,” Beseler said at a Thursday morning news conference.

Authorities will work to pinpoint where the garbage load that contained the girl’s body came from, Beseler said. The garbage that was brought into that part of the landfill was collected in the Orange Park area, Beseler had said Wednesday, noting that authorities routinely search garbage when a missing person case has been initiated.

“There is a child killer on the loose,” the sheriff said. “I fear for our community until we bring this person in.”

Rewards totaling $30,000 have been offered information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Somer’s killing. Sad news…

Collin Wilcox Paxton, most remembered for her role in “To Kill a Mockingbird” as the white girl that accused the black man of rape in the classic movie from 1962. Collin Wilcox died of brain cancer at her home in North Carolina at the age of 74.

Collin Wilcox Paxton was an accomplished stage actress who began appearing on Broadway 1958 with “The Day the Money Stopped” opposite Richard Basehart.

Collin then worked with Tallulah Bankhead in “Crazy October,” Geraldine Page in “Strange Interlude” and Ruth Gordon in “La Bonne Soup,” and also starred in the off-Broadway productions of Tennessee Williams’ “Camino Real” and “Suddenly, Last Summer.”

In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Wilcox Paxton played the role of Mayella Violet Ewell, the daughter of a racist who accused Brock Peters’ character of rape. One of the scenes that is very memorable is when she was cross-examined by Gregory Peck “Atticus Finch”.

Collin later appeared on television in “The Twilight Zone,” “Playhouse 90,” “The Waltons” and “Columbo.”  But Collin left Hollywood in the early ’80s to care for her mother.

Collin Wilcox Paxton didn’t appear professionally after leaving Hollywood but she and her husband Scott founded the Highlands Studio for the Arts, which offered arts education classes to children. They also created the Instant Theater Company, a local acting troupe.

Collin Wilcox Paxton is survived by her husband Scott Paxton and their children, Kimberley and Michael.

Al Martino, who played Johnny Fontaine on “Godfather” became known for one of the most famous movie lines in history “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse”, has died at 82. Read more on Al Martino’s death below.

Al Martino died yesterday of a heart attack in his Springfield home. Martino had just turned 82 last Wednesday.

Martino’s death was unexpected because he had not been sick and was still performing.

Martino blasted onto the music scene in the 1950’s with his song “Here In My Heart”, which sold over a million copies. Other hits included “Spanish Eyes,” “Volare,” “Take My Heart,” and “Cara Mia”.

Martino is probably best remembered for his role as Johnny Fontane in The Godfather. And is equally well known for the line in the movie… “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse”.

He also played aging crooner Sal Stevens in the film “Cutout,” in 2006.

Martino’s son, Al Cini, said, “I have so many wonderful memories of my father I don’t even know where to start.” He praised his father’s “warmth and great sense of humor.”

“He was the last of the show-business legends,” said entertainer Jerry Blavat, a longtime friend. “There’s nobody else.” Jerry frequently played Martino’s songs on his oldies shows.

Growing up, Martino worked as a bricklayer in his family’s construction business. He was a combat Marine in World War II, wounded in the Iwo Jima campaign. After the war, Al Cini changed his name to Martino following in the footsteps of his pal, Alfred Cocozza, who changed his name to Mario Lanza and became a legend.

Martino often said that he was inspired by Al Jolson and Perry Como to take up singing. He appeared in local night spots, including the iconic Palumbo’s, before winning first place in Arthur Godfrey’s “Talent Scouts” TV program in 1948. He sang a rendition of Como’s “If.” That success earned him a contract with the Philadelphia-based BBS label.

The success of “Here In My Heart” got him a contract with Capitol Records.

Ironically, for a man destined to perform in a Mafia-related movie, Martino ran into problems when his contract was taken over by a Mafia-connected management team.

He was ordered to pay $75,000 as a safeguard against their investment. He made a down payment, but then fled to the United Kingdom. He performed there in such venues as the London Palladium.

It wasn’t until 1958 that he felt safe enough to return to the U.S.

He had some difficulty reestablishing himself in the fickle music business. He recorded for 20th Century Fox for a time, but the label dropped him.

The popularity of a new album, “The Exciting Voice of Al Martino” (1962), got him a new deal with Capitol. He followed that with a mostly Italian-language album, “The Italian Voice of Al Martino.” He also made some appearances on television.

In 1963, his comeback hit, “I Love You Because,” went to No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1965, he gained further popularity with “Spanish Eyes,” which achieved several gold and platinum disks for sales. His 1976 hit, “Volare,” also called “Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu,” enjoyed mega-sales here and abroad. In 2000, he recorded an album, “Style.”

Besides his son, he is survived by his wife, Judy, and two daughters, Alison Martino and Alana Cini.

Kelly Ann Walz, 37, who has exotic animals as pets, was killed after being attacked by her pet black bear. Read more on Kelly Ann  Walz’s mauling death below.

Pennsylvania State Police report they were called to the woman’s home at about 5 p.m. on Sunday and found dead from being attacked by the black bear.

According to Lehigh Valley Live, Tim Conway, the game commission’s educational supervisor for their region, said Kelly Ann Walz went inside the bear’s 15-by-15-foot steel and concrete enclosure to clean it and feed the bear.

Walz reportedly threw a shovelful of dog food to one side of the cage to distract the black bear while she cleaned the other side of the cage.  But at some point the 350-pound bear turned on Walz and killed her.

The truly disturbing part of the story is that Walz’s children and the neighbor’s children witness the bear attack and went for help. A neighbor shot and killed the bear while it was on top of Walz.

“Why this woman chose to go in the same area that the bear was in is beyond me. It’s a fatal mistake,” he said. “These things are not tame animals, they’re wild animals.”

Conway said the bear had been kept as a pet since 2000 when the owners applied for a license. This was not a free-roaming bear that attacked the woman. She also had a Bengal tiger and an African lion, cougar, jaguar, tiger, black bear, leopard and two servals.

Why in the world would anyone want to have those exotic animals captive at their home, especially with children around?  Go to the effing zoo you know!

Kandi Burruss of The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s ex-fiance, Ashley “A.J”. Jewell, was killed during a fight at an Atlanta strip club called Body Tap. Read more on A.J. Jewell’s death below.

A.J. Jewell was involved in a brawl at  Body Tap at 1271 Marietta Boulevard in Atalanta yesterday. Jewell, father of six kiddos, was taken to Piedmont Hospital where he was pronounced dead of massive head injuries.

Police in Atlanta made an arrest in the death of A.J. Jewell. Fredrick Richardson has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and is being held at Grady Detention due to his injuries.

Kandi Burruss is newest member to join the cast of reality show, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” and is very distraught to learn of Jewell’s death. Kandi Burruss is said to be stunned and speechless.

Burruss posted a message on her Twitter page Saturday expressing how the incident has left her devasated.”I could never in a million years imagine this happening. Please pray for A.J.’s children … that’s who i’m the most concerned for. I’m about to give my swollen eyes some rest now. I just wanted to say thanks two everyone for their prayers,” said Burruss.

Kandi Burruss is an award-winning singer-songwriter and former member of the ’90s R&B group Xscape.

The New York DJ, Mr. Magic, who helped promote hip-hop and rap has died of a heart attack. Read more on Mr. Magic’s death below.

Mr. Magic, whose real name was John Rivas,  has been mentioned in the songs of rappers such as Nas, Biggie Smalls and Tupac.  He began hosting the first hip-hop radio show called “Rap Attack” back in 1983.

Mr. Magic became a big name on the airways and was known to feud with fellow local radio DJ Red Alert.

You may have also heard of Mr. Magic from the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

It’s being reported that at least 111 people are dead in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga.  Local rescuers fear the death toll will rise as they journey to outlying villages squashed by the wave.

CNN reports that American Samoa resident Frances Faumatu said she fled to Aoloau, the highest village on the island.

“All of a sudden we heard on the radio everybody had to run for safety,” she said. “Right after the quake, the tsunami came.”

Faumatu and many others stayed on the mountain for two or three hours until the warning was lifted. They saw Pago Pago, the island’s capital, appear to be swallowed by the sea.

At least 22 people are confirmed dead in the U.S. island territory. There are cars, boats, debris, and parts of buildings strewn over the landscape.

The 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Samoan islands early Tuesday.

There are about 220,000 people live on the two main islands which make up the nation of Samoa. The population of American Samoa is about 66,000.

Patients at the hospital were reported moved to higher ground, but returned and the hospital is operating, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency said. The airport in the capital of Pago Pago was also operational and being used for emergency flights, FEMA said.

“The wave came onshore and washed out people’s homes,” said Cinta Brown, an American Samoa homeland security official working at the island’s emergency operations center.

American Samoa Gov. Togiola Tulafono, speaking from Hawaii, said Tuesday’s quake ranked “right up there with some of the worst” disasters on the island. He said he had spoken to the military about mobilizing reserve forces for assistance.

Tulafono was headed back home from Hawaii on Tuesday night on one of two U.S. Coast Guard transport planes delivering aid. He said it was difficult being away as the disaster happened.

President Obama declared American Samoa a major disaster area, ordering federal aid to supplement local efforts.

The Coast Guard is transporting more than 20 officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to American Samoa

The quake generated three separate tsunami waves, the largest measuring 5.1 feet from sea level height, said Vindell Hsu, a geophysicist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
