American Idol judge, Simon Cowell, is giving back and working with a children’s hospice spending time with sick children because he doesn’t have children of his own. Read more on Simon Cowell’s involvement in the charity below.

Simon Cowell has always said he was “too selfish” to start his own family but has now become a part of Chase children’s hospice in Surrey, England because he enjoys spending time with the kids there.

Cowell admits he prefers talking with the children because he finds them more honest than adults.

He says, “The directness of these remarkable children is like a breath of fresh air. I often get a good grilling, although I find it a lot easier to talk to children than adults. If truth be told, I’m maybe just a big kid myself. Over the years I have grown incredibly close to some of the children, probably because I don’t have kids of my own.”

But Cowell says he has been emotionally affected by the tragic stories of the ill children.

He adds, “One little girl, a total sweetheart, was always winding me up by insisting we would be married one day. Sadly she recently died. It was terrible and confusing moment to learn that someone so young had passed away.”

Cowell is also urging U.K. politicians to provide more institutions to care for sick children: “The lack of government support is frustrating – and by becoming patron of Children Hospices U.K. I hope to bring pressure to bear at the very highest level. And I’m pretty good at persuading people.”

British actor Orlando Bloom was asked to be a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund. Read more on Orlando Bloom working with UNICEF below.

Orlando Bloom, “Pirates of the Caribbean”,  star first worked with the organization in 2007 and has since worked with Unicef officials to raise awareness on the rights of children in the world.

Bloom says, “I look forward to working with Unicef as they continue to make the world a better place for children.

“Unicef doesn’t just deliver humanitarian aid, which is what they are known for all over the world; they also educate and provide tools which help women and children face challenges specific to their own lives. I responded to how Unicef works as much as I did to the work itself. I look forward to learning more and to supporting Unicef any way I can.”

Bloom’s first task as a Goodwill Ambassador will be to film a public service announcement highlighting the importance of access to clean drinking water.

He joins stars including Angelina Jolie, Selena Gomez and George Clooney who also lend their time to the organization.

Blink 182 have pledged to donate $100,000 to the burn centers that treated their drummer, Travis Barker, after he nearly lost his life after a plane crash last year. Read more on this story below.

Travis Barker and the late DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) were the only ones to survive the crash, as the plane they were in failed to clear the runway and burst into flames.

Sadly DJ AM survived the plane crash but died of a drug overdose this past month.

The two pilots and all the other passengers died in the crash, and Goldstein and Barker were left with second and third-degree burns. T

Now Barker is saying a big thanks to all the medical specialists that treated him at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Georgia and the Grossman Burn Center in California by donating the proceeds from Blink-182’s show in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday.

In a statement the band says the donation is “being made in recognition of their tremendous care and aid of Travis Barker through his recovery from the 2008 plane crash”.

Grammy-winning rapper Ludacris has generously given away 20 cars to people who wrote about their struggles to keep their jobs due to not having a vehicle. Read more on Ludacris’ car give-away below.

Ludacris was touched after reading thousands of essays by people struggling or unable to buy cars that needed to get to and from work or find jobs.  Ludacris, 31, felt he could help and partnered with an Atlanta dealership for Sunday’s giveaway.  .

“People are getting laid off, and now are looking for jobs,” Ludacris said. “To be efficient, you need some transportation of your own to get there. That’s why I wanted to give back to those who need it.”

Each of these used vehicles included free gas for 30 days. The winning contestants were responsible for tags, registration, tax and insurance. About 4,000 contestants submitted a 300-word essay to the rapper’s foundation, explaining why they needed a car.

Ludacris said one of the most touching stories he read was by Mading Duor.

Duor described how he moved to the United States six years ago after his mother, father, and five brothers and sisters were killed in Sudan. The man also wrote that a son was killed by a drunken driver in Atlanta a few years back.

“His story touched my heart,” Ludacris said. “He’s endured so much in his life and he’s still here standing. I’m very proud to have helped him.”

Duor, 33, has been able to keep a steady job at a school, but each day he felt stressed about how he was going to get to work.

“I’m so happy, that I’m nervous,” said Duor, who won a Nissan Maxima. “When I look at my new car, I say to myself, ‘Is this really happening?’”

Crystal Beauford, a single mom that rode the bus to her two jobs and school was given a Saturn Ion. The 26-year-old college student doesn’t know how to drive the stick-shift vehicle, but said she’ll learn.

“This is going to help me out so much,” Beauford said. “It’s a blessing.”

Ludacris won Grammys for Best Rap Album for “Release Therapy” and Best Rap Song for “Money Maker.”

Michael Phelps announced this morning that he is putting part of his $1 million bonus for tying Mark Spitz’s record, into a foundation to encourage the growth of swimming for kids.

Awesome Olympian, Michael Phelps has announced his plan to donate some of his $1 million to help encourage the love of swimming.

Phelps earned the bonus from the Speedo company after he tied Spitz’s 36-year record of seven gold medals in a single Games. He then beat the record, winning eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics 2008.

Phelps, 23, announced his plan on the “Today Show” with host Matt Lauer. Phelps will be traveling to eight cities in the United States to promote swimming among youth.

No mention today about Phelps buying the North Baltimore Aquatic Club’s Meadowbrook pool. Just last month Phelps told NBC’s Nightly News that he and his coach, Bob Bowman, had bought a pool in Baltimore and were wanting to promote swimming. Bowman was named NBAC’s chief executive officer and is expected to start the job this month.

Not only is Michael Phelps an awesome athlete but it’s great to see him giving back in this manner.

Michael Lohan is said to be challenging K-Fed to a boxing match for charity!

“Everyone wants me to fight K-fed because he’s a notorious celebrity dad and so am I,” Michael tells OK! exclusively. “It’s for charity.

It might be a tad humorous to see these two douches slugging it out huh? The money from the Kevin Federline and Michael Lohan fight would benefit the Long Island’s Fight for Charity. So it’s all for a good cause!

Michael Lohan is obviously taking the fight with K-Fed very seriously saying, “It’s serious boxing,” he explains. “You have to go get a trainer. I have to register with the Mature Boxing Association.”

Actually Kevin Federline wasn’t his very first choice, Lohan wanted to duke it out with Richard Johnson, editor of the NY Post’s Page 6 gossip column. Surprised he didn’t want to throw down with Perez Hilton or how about Jeff of Stupid Celebrities? We’d like to see that!

Lindsay Lohan’s dad, Michael Lohan doesn’t mind much who he goes against and said, “I don’t care who it is; it’s for charity. I’ve been beaten up by the press, so I don’t care if I get a few shots by a kid half my age.”

Michael Lohan said his girlfriend also wants to get in on the action. “They’re trying to match her up with Debbie Gibson,” he says.

No word yet if Kevin Federline is going to accept the challenge to fight against Michael Lohan. Who do you think will get beat down?

Of all the bands from past decades that continue to tour, Crosby, Stills and Nash remain among the most relevant and the most enduring.

Those attending the concerts of David Crosby and band Crosby, Stills, and Nash really span in generations, and the concert audiences continue to prove that fact.

There are hippie parents with their kids, hipsters, and numbers of long-haired teenage music geeks.

The timeliness of the band’s repertoire is due in part to a political climate in the United States that is comparable to past eras. Yet the music of Crosby, Stills and Nash is also so familiar, comforting, and honest that it will likely never slip into the category of foolish nostalgia (with the exception, perhaps, of hits like Guinevere and Our House).

The trio of CSN has definitely aged. And not particularly well, if you compare them to other long-touring acts.

But that is all part of their charm. They don’t try to look plastic and fake, like aging rock-stars.

David Crosby, with his mane of white hair and rosy cheeks, looks like he belongs on a hippie reseration, doing yoga and tending to his organic garden. Stephen Stills, who is recovering from prostate surgery, looks the part of a friendly salesman in his creased trousers and golf shirt. And Graham Nash looks like a smoothie-drinking ladies’ man who hates to wear shoes.

Crosby, Stills, and Nash still retain their strong signature harmonies, but Stills’ voice has suffered a bit and is at times unpredictible.

His guitar playing, however, remains superb. That balance between guitar rock, ballads and easy folk songs made the night varied and demonstrated the benefits of having unique talents in the band.

This band apparently have big hearts and give of their time to play for charity events. One great cause was the benefit for Farber’s American Transplant Foundation. Organ donation is something especially close to David Crosby as he himself received a liver transplant in 1995. Farber, who received a kidney from his son in 2004, has since been a strong advocate of transplant awareness.

David Crosby had this to say about the benefit, “People are dying with (healthy organs) and being buried with them instead of donating them,” Crosby explained in a phone interview. “We try very hard to help organ-donor organizations when we can.”

For David Crosby, giving of his time for this great charity was a no-brainer. “Obviously, people die every day for a lack of an organ,” he said.

Money raised by the show “will go right into the foundation. The foundation’s prime focus is creating a greater awareness about transplants,” Farber said. “I wish there was an abundance of organs available. But you have 100,000 people on a waiting list in our country alone. And 18 die every day because of a shortage of organs available.”

A concert film of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 2006 anti-war tour, CSNY Deju Vu, closed the Sundance Film Festival this year and continues to make waves.

Graham Nash recently allowed protesters to remake his hit, Chicago, as the song, Come Up To Denver.

All this has helped rejuvenate the band’s role as a political force, Crosby said.

“The shut-up-and-sing thing is people wanting what they want and not wanting to hear what you have to say. Tough. We’ve been doing it for 40 years. People should not expect something else.”

Celebrities assembled at a photocall ahead of this Friday’s Nelson Mandela’s concert. Mr Mandela will turn 90 on his birthday in July 18 but the celebrations have already started.

On Wed. June 25, there was a charity dinner in honor of Nelson Mandela. Sir Elton John, Robert De Niro, Uma Thurman and Neil Diamond were among the many celebrities who turned up. They raised about £5 million for Mr Mandela’s charities.

Amy Winehouse was supposed to show up for the photocall as she has agreed to sing at the Nelson Mandela concert but she failed to show up. Amy was released from hospital on Mon. June 23 after her doctors confirmed that her illness was treatable.

Charles Barkley, the retired celebrity basketball player, will be playing poker again in Las Vegas. Charles had experienced trouble with a huge gambling debt of $400,000, which he said he had repaid.

Charles said that he was scheduled to play in a celebrity poker tourney. This special event was billed as the “Ante Up for Africa” function. It would be held at the 2008 World Series of Poker.

All poker players have to pay an advance of $5000 to play. If they win, they have to donate at least 50% of their loot to charity. Charles promised to donate all of his winnings. He is debt free now and wants to do something for charity.
