The Union County Prosecutor’s Office says police are searching for “Kai” Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, who they believe is responsible for the death of the 73-year-old lawyer.
The 24-year-old Internet celebrity is well known on YouTube as “Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker” after intervening in a racist attack in Fresno, California. But now the hatchet-wielding hero is a wanted man!
The victim, Joseph Galfy, was found inside his home on Starlite Drive on Monday after officers received wellfare-check call.
An autopsy performed the following day determined that Galfy died as a result of blunt force trauma.
Police said Kai met the attorney near Times Square and a surveillance camera captured images of them as they headed back to Galfy’s home.
A post was made to his Facebook page on Tuesday and Kai claims he was raped by the man.
Kai, aka, Caleb Kai Lawrence Yodhehwawheh as he calls himself on Facebook, wrote later on Tuesday, “raped for social justice woo fu*kin hoo”.
Neighbors of 73-year-old Joseph Galfy said the lawyer had been living alone in the home since his longtime partner passed away five years ago.
Friends and coworkers knew something was amiss when Galfy didn’t show up for work on Monday.
Kai, who is probably armed with his trusty hatchet, was last seen in the New Jersey area at a rail station. He reached out to fans on Facebook and said he was headed to Philadelphia and then to Georgia.
McGillvary became an instant celebrity when he helped a woman fight off a 300 pound man with a hatchet and giving a hilarious interview to a local television reporter.
Kai was arrested Thursday in Philadelphia at around 6:30 p.m. at the Greyhound Bus Terminal and charged the murder last Sunday of Joseph Galfy Jr..
McGillvary had cut off his long hair and had gotten a face tattoo recently, possibly hoping to disguise himself.
McGillvary is being held on $3 million bail in the Union County Jail in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
