Former porn star Harry Reems, who co-starred in the 1972 movie Deep Throat, died on Tuesday at the age 65.
Reems enjoyed a successful career in the porn industry for almost a decade but alcohol addiction brought him to his knees.
He found religion in the late 1980s and began working in Utah as a real estate agent.
His wife, Jeanne Sterrett, reported his death on Wednesday. He had been suffering from multiple medical issues, including pancreatic cancer.
Harry Reems played the male lead in “Deep Throat”, a popular adult film that brough pornography to mainstream audiences.
The movie, which was a huge hit at the box office, led to Reems being convicted of obscenity for his role in the film.
Celebrities including Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty came to Reems’ defense, and the conviction was overturned.
After “Deep Throat”, Reems went on to star in dozens of adult movies.
His wife said, “He hated, at the end, doing porn. It was all he could make money doing.”
Reems left the porn industry and moved to Park City, Utah in the 1980s, where he underwent an alcohol treatment program and worked as a real estate agent.
In a 2006 interview with the Deseret News, Reems described his battles with alcohol and how his life transformed after he became sober. He said, “I literally should be dead. I know a lot of people who drank a lot less than me, and they are dead. God has left me on this Earth for a reason, and I think it’s to save lives.”
Harry Reems struggled with multiple health problems in his final years and was hospitalized on March 5. His health problems kept him at home in recent years and he went through chemotherapy earlier this year for early stage pancreatic cancer.
Harry is survived by his wife, Jeanne Reems, and a brother. He had no children.
