Oscar Pistorius admitted shooting his model girlfriend dead today in court, but claimed he mistook her for a burglar in the middle of the night.

Pistorius, who was nicknamed the Blade Runner, detailed the events of that tragic night when he shot and killed his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.

The athlete said he was on the balcony when he heard noises in the bathroom and shot through the door. He believed Reeva was asleep in bed.

Pistorius said he shouted a warning before firing four shots through the bathroom door.

He then realized Reeva Steenkamp wasn’t in bed and kicked the bathroom door open and tried to revive her.

Pistorius, 26, cried inconsolably during his bail hearing. The judge had to call for a break to let Oscar compose himself before proceeding with the hearing.

Pistorius, who last year became the first double-amputee track athlete to run at the Olympics, will probably remain behind bars until trial.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court a very different story of what happened that tragic evening. He said Reeva arrived at around 6 p.m. on February 13 with her overnight bag.

Nel said it was a premeditated murder and that Reeva was shot when she ran to hide in the bathroom after they had been arguing.

The prosecutor said, “The applicant armed himself, attached his prosthesis, walked seven meters to the bathroom and shot the deceased while she was in the toilet. He shot four times…There’s no possible explanation to support his report that he thought it was a burglar.”

One bullet cartridge was found in Pistorius’ bedroom and investigators are looking at the posibility he “chased” his girlfriend and fired the first shot before she locked herself in the bathroom and he fired three more through the door.

An autopsy on the body of the 29-year-old model revealed that she had bullet wounds to the head, arm, hand and hip and also had a fractured skull.

The blood-splattered cricket bat on the scene may be the key to the investigation. A source said, “There was lots of blood on the bat. Forensic tests will show whose blood it was.”

Oscar Pistorius said, “I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder, let alone premeditated murder because I had no intention to kill. I had no intention to kill my girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Oscar said, “On February 13 Reeva would have gone out with her friends, me with mine. She wanted to stay at home. I was watching TV. My legs were off. She was doing yoga. At the end of the evening we got into bed.

“I’m acutely aware of people gaining entries to homes to commit crime, I’ve received death threats. I sleep with my 9mm under my bed. I woke up to close the sliding door and heard a noise in the bathroom.

“I was scared and didn’t switch on the light. I got my gun and moved towards the bathroom. I screamed at the intruder because I did not have my legs on I felt vulnerable. I fired shots through the bathroom door and told Reeva to call police. I walked back to the bed and realized Reeva was not in bed. It’s then it dawned on me it could be her in there.

“I kicked the door open. Called paramedics and complex security. I tried to carry her downstairs for help. I tried to help her but she died in my arms”.

Oscar Pistorius also stated he was very in love with his girlfriend and that she bought him a Valentine’s Day gift, but told him not to open it until the following day.
