Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s estranged wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, 52, was found dead of an apparent suicide in an outbuilding on the property of their Westchester County home.
The Westchester Coroner’s report lists Mary Kennedy’s death as asphyxiation by hanging.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., filed for divorce from Mary after 16 years of marriage in 2010. Robert is now dating “Curb Your Enthusiasm” actress Cheryl Hines, who also happened to split from her husband Paul Young in 2010.
Police were called to the Kennedy’s home for a “domestic incident” at the time of Robert’s divorce filing. Robert claimed his wife was intoxicated.
Three days later, Mary was arrested for DUI after police spotted her running over a curb near her home. Mary had a .11 blood alcohol level. She was fined $500 and had her license suspended for 90 days.
In August 2010, Mary was charged with driving under the influence of drugs after speeding down the Taconic State Parkway. She was reportedly under the influence of prescription medication.
Police reports confirm that officers Mary’s body was found in an outbuilding on the property of their home.
Mary’s family released a statement following the news of her death.
“We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation,” the statement read.
Mary was Robert’s second wife. The couple has four children together.
Kennedy Jr. is the son of former Sen. Robert Kennedy and the nephew of President John F. Kennedy.
