Marriages in Hollywood don’t seem to last very long, which is why most attorney’s recommend a prenuptial agreement be signed before couples make that trip down the aisle.
Divorce is very common among just normal folks, but celebrities seem to have the worst luck because of being constantly in the public eye.
Most Hollywood couples agree on signing a prenup to protect both parties, but there are several high-profile stars that opted out of drawing up that legal document for various reasons.
Some would argue that signing a legal document protecting your assets seems “unromantic”, but we should all learn from some very expensive celebrity divorce cases that ended with disastrous financial consequences.
Let’s take a look at celebrity couples that decided not to sign that little piece of paper to protect their assets!
Mel Gibson finalized his divorce in December 2011 to his wife of 28 years, Robyn. She was awarded half of Mel’s $850 million fortune. There was no prenuptial agreement in place.
Cheating pro golfer Tiger Woods had to hand over around $100 million to his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren in their divorce settlement.
Madonna’s divorce situation was a bit different, with her being the one to pay up big time! The Material Girls’ divorce reportedly cost her $90 million. Madonna and Guy Ritchie were married for eight years, but did not have a prenup.
Reese Witherspoon had to fork over half of her moolah to her cheating ex-husband, actor Ryan Phillippe. The couple had no prenup and under California law, he was awarded half of her fortune. There were no reports of the exact payout but Reese was making about $15 per movie at that time.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney had to hand over his ex, Heather Mills, around $45 million in 2008. In addition, the court ordered the singer to give $70,000 a year for their daughter Beatrice’s needs, and to also pay for her nanny and her school costs.

Director Steven Spielberg had to give his ex-wife, actress Amy Irving, half of his fortune when they split after four years of marriage. But, here’s the kicker…they actually had a prenuptial agreement! Irving was able to contest the prenup, and left the marriage with $100 million.
Kevin Costner ended his marriage to Cindy Costner in 1994 after 16 years of marriage. The actor had to pay his former college sweetheart around $80 million. They had three children together.
Prenuptial agreements aren’t just for the rich and famous! The legal agreement protects your legal rights, no matter how much money you make!
Hugh Hefner previously said, “I had a prenup the last time I got married. Why would anyone assume I wouldn’t have one this time? A prenup protects everyone.”
