Bookstores Barnes & Noble and Borders have decided against displaying the most recent cover of fashion mag Dossier Journal, because androgynous male model Andrej Pejic is shirtless.
The retail giants have decided to censor the Dossier Journal publication by covering them in opaque plastic bags. Sources claim Pejic looks just “too much like a woman”.
Dossier Co-Founder and Creative Director Skye Parrott said it’s actually only American bookstores that have taken issue with their cover.
“It’s a naked man on the cover of a magazine, which is done all of the time without being covered up, so I definitely don’t think it merits this, but I understand what it is,” Parrott stated. “It’s not a coincidence that it’s only the giant U.S. chain stores that are asking us to do this…It’s only the American copies that are being censored.”
The decision to censor their cover will probably affect sales but Parrott believes the cover picture “probably made people uncomfortable”.
Parrott adds, “But that’s part of what’s interesting about the cover, I think, is that it’s playing with those ideas of gender roles.”
Andrej Pejic, 19, is one of the top male models, taking the fashion industry by storm. He was discovered at age 17 while working at McDonalds.
