Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood, 32, shot the two students at Deer Creek Middle School, which is just miles from Columbine High School, where one of the deadliest school shootings occurred back in 1999.
Eastwood was tackled by David Benke, a math teacher and track coach, as the gunman prepared to fire on students again.
“[The shooter] was trying to rack another round,” Benke told the station. “I knew he couldn’t get another round in before I got to him, so I grabbed him.”
The gunman is in custody and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning, facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
A parent who saw the incident stated that the gunman kept mumbling, “I’m fighting for freedom. I’m fighting for freedom,” as he was being subdued.
Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood has a history of violence including domestic violence, assault, menacing, driving under the influence and motor vehicle theft.
The shooter’s father, War Eagle Eastwood, said his son led a deeply troubled life. He added that his son “hears voices.”
The injured students, a boy and a girl, were taken to Littleton Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
