Mjr Nidal Malik Hasan (Photos) Gunman In Fort Hood Shooting Alive & In Custody

Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the gunman behind the massacre at Fort Hood, is said to be alive and in custody.

But who is Nidal Malik Hasan?

Major Hasan obtained his medical degree from the Defense Department’s F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland.

Hasan was at Walter Reed for six years before being transferred to Ft. Hood in July.

Hasan had no prior overseas deployments, a Pentagon official told ABC News. Hasan was promoted to the rank of Major in May 2009.

Nidal Malik Hasan, was born in Virginia, and was not married and had no children. His parents are reportedly originally from Jordan.

Nidal Hasan’s cousin, Nader Hasan,  said that Majjor Hasan had two brothers, one in the United States, and the other in Jerusalem. Nidal Malik Hasan was said by his cousin to be a lifelong Muslim.

Hasan graduated from Virginia Tech University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 1997. At Walter Reed, he did his internship, residency and a fellowship.

In public records, Hasan’s name is spelled differently. Virginia spells it Nidal, but several Army officials said the name they had was Nadal.  A record released to the press listed him as Nidal (AbduWali) Malik Hasan.

Major Hasan opened fire at a processing center for soldiers being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Two other men were arrested as suspects but have been released.

All but one of the victims were said to be in the Army but that was a civilian police officer employed by the Department of Defense at Ft. Hood.

Major Hasan reportedly used two handguns in the shootings.

But what prompted the massacre of the soldiers?

Hasan’s cousin Nader Hasan said that she believed it was his upcoming deployment combined with the wartime horror stories he heard from his patients that set him off. Hasan had even recently hired an attorney to help him get out of the military.

Hasan was reportedly also harassed after 9/11 because of his ethnicity, and was called a “camel jockey.”

The Army psychiatrist suspected of carrying a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, had come to the attention of authorities six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats, law enforcement officials said Thursday.

The postings appeared to have been made by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who was wounded during the shootings at the Army post that killed 12 soldiers and wounded at least 30 others. A Fort Hood spokesman had earlier said Hasan was killed.

The officials say they are still trying to confirm that Hasan was the author of the Internet postings. They say an official investigation was not opened.

One of the officials said late Thursday that federal search warrants were being drawn up to authorize the seizure of Hasan’s computer. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.

“To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its (sic) more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause,” said the Internet posting. “Scholars have paralled (sic) this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers.”
