“Dancing with the Stars” professional dancers Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy have called off their engagement. Read what the couple had to say about their split below.

The Dancing With the Stars couple have broken off their engagement. Smirnoff’s rep stated, “I am confirming that they did indeed break up.”

Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy’s split comes a month after their Broadway debut in “Burn the Floor,” a summer show that required the couple to perform eight shows a week.

There were signs their relationship was struggling in July when the couple put their wedding on hold in order to meet work commitments.

“We’re [working] 14 hours a day,” Chmerkovskiy stated. “This is our life right now.”

Smirnoff added, “We’re not rushing. As long as we’re together, tying the knot is a plus, it’s something extra.”

The pair, who became engaged in December 2008, had hired a wedding planner and already made plans to wed in Manhattan’s famed Plaza hotel in June 2010.

Chmerkovskiy, 29, posted on Twitter Monday: “What was meant to be a ‘life long book’, turned into a ‘chapter’…….and now that ‘chapter’ is finished…… Se la vie…”

The dancers became engaged on New Year’s Eve 2008, just six months after Karina, 31,  split from Mario Lopez.

“DWTS” fans should expect to see a little tension between the exes when they reunite for the season premiere of  “Dancing with the Stars” on Sept. 21.
