“First Black Supermodel” Naomi Sims Dies at Age 61
Posted on August 3, 2009
Supermodel Naomi Sims died on Saturday at the age of 61 of cancer. Read more on Naomi Sims and see her photos below.
Naomi Sims was considered by most to be the “first black supermodel” after appearing on the cover of Ladies Home Journal in November 1968.
Sims modeled for clothing designers like Halston, Fernando Sánchez, Teal Traina, and Giorgio di Sant’Angelo. Naomi also appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine in 1969 and on the New York Times fashion mag in 1967.
After Sims modeled for around five years, she retired and went on to start her own multimillion-dollar wig-making business that specialized in wigs for black women. Sims also wrote books on beauty and modeling.
Our condolences to the friends and family of Naomi Sims.
